Our Inspiration

Mayer Rossabi was a man who cared about other people and was always looking for ways to help them. He was full of life and laughter and was "beautifully opinionated" in his zest for making the world a better place. He was a college professor for more than 35 years; he helped desegregate schools in New York City and he coached at the college level for many years. Mayer passed away in 1998 before he could do all he wanted for this world.

As a tribute to his father, Mayer, Amiel Rossabi founded Sports Dreams, Inc. in 2003. Sports Dreams is a non-profit organization that began as an organization dedicated to supporting socio-economically disadvantaged girls in Guilford County through its "Girls in the Game" health and fitness program. Research has shown that girls, at around age 11, begin to make life choices for themselves regarding their eating habits, drug and alcohol use, sexual involvement and gang participation. If given the chance, during these years, to participate in sports, girls are more likely to make positive life choices and have a better chance at success. Also, when encouraged in sports, regardless of their skill level, girls show a marked increase in their self esteem. In 2006 Sports Dreams expanded their program to offer its program to disadvantaged boys in Guilford County. In addition, Sports Dreams has partnered with another local non-profit to offer after-school tutoring and homework assistance. "Get in the Game" is now the name of the Sports Dreams after-school program. Boys and girls are separated during their after-school activities, yet all the children enjoy the benefits of "Get in the Game."

Sports Dreams depends on community partners and donations to keep the program alive. Your tax-deductible donation can make a tremendous difference in the life of a child.
