In Memory - Lisa Leisten

Lisa Leisten was born March 17, 1970 in Omaha, Nebraska. Her family later moved to Greenville, NC, which is where she attended Rose High School. During her high school years, she was a successful student and a tremendous athlete. Her senior year she was recognized with the H. L. Hodges award, which recognized her as the top female athlete in her high school. She also earned most valuable player honors in basketball and soccer. She was the only student (male or female) to ever earn honors in 4 sports at Rose High School.

While she continued to play a variety of sports, she was recruited to play both basketball and soccer in college. In 1988, Lisa decided to attend the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and become a member of the inaugural women's soccer team. She had a very successful career as a 4-year starter. She impressed coaches and players with her athletic ability and competitiveness. Jack Poland, the former UNCG women's soccer coach, said, "'Schleis' (as she became affectionately known), had an infectious smile and was a fierce competitor." Her natural athleticism was enviable, yet she was extremely humble.

Lisa's kindness and encouragement towards her friends will always be remembered. Whether she was giving hugs, a big smile, or words of encouragement, her teammates knew she would be supportive on the field and off. Heather Puckett Henson, a former teammate, said, "She always made me feel confident about being a defender on a top level team. Levery time I would see her, she would always give me a big hug."

Lisa graduated from UNCG with a degree in Exercise Sports Science and minored in business. She went on to work for Wandel & Goltrmann, a computer print and design company and later as the Web page Marketing Manager for Overton's Sporting Goods. Lisa also developed a passion for surfing, skiing and parachuting.

Lisa's dedication to women's soccer contributed to the history of the program and created lasting memories and friendships amongst her UNCG soccer family. She was a loyal friend who will always be remembered for her hugs, big smile, strength, and positive attitude.
